Fine art portraits is directed by the photographer. It can convey emotion or a mood just from the face of the subject. From this emotion, the viewer can translate it into what the meaning of the photo is. Color, framing, props, and other elements are controlled by the photographer to convey meaning.

Herb Ritts

Herb Ritts photo is very close to the face and uses the spear as a prop. He doesn't distract the viewer from the message: he aimed to show the "unceasing cycle of life and death, beauty and ferocity".

The other photo taken by Steve Mccury carries a lot more emotional meaning to me. It shows childhood innocence and creativity, looking at the color of clothing and pieces. But this with the gun provides an extreme contrast, almost as though the childhood is being robbed. The casual element of this is also unexpected and consequentially more powerful.
